OpenAI has released Sora, its new AI tool that’s able to generate amazingly realistic videos from text prompts.

Last summer, I released two episodes warning about the dangers of AI and why Christians should be on high alert. The episodes were off the back of the traction that ChatGPT was gaining. One of the things I warned about was the speed at which AI would develop. I warned you that whatever they are showing you is possible now, they’ve already surpassed it in their labs. They are just releasing the dumbed-down version to the masses.

Some people have spent the last year laughing at people like me for overreacting. I saw lots of memes mocking those who had real concerns about AI. I’ve been saying this privately for a while. Laughing at the capabilities of AI right now is like laughing at a baby for being unable to walk.

Now nobody is laughing because this new OpenAI baby is not only walking but sprinting. And we have not seen anything yet.

Did you see that nightmare-inducing AI video of Will Smith eating spaghetti last year? Here’s a quick screenshot. It was horrible. Look it up on YouTube. That was what AI could generate back then.

Less than a year later, they’ve showcased the new super creepy tool they’ve been working on. We all know once it’s released to the world, although it will be used for some good, it will also bring chaos.

I want to add this before we get too carried away. Please remember that technology is not necessarily evil.

Just like a weapon doesn’t kill people, people kill people, this tech is just a tool that can be used for good or bad purposes. It’s been used for good every single day in ways that are just amazing. However, the question is at what cost? What are we sacrificing for these positive privileges that AI is affording us? What is the end game for some of the creators of these tools? What exactly is motivating them? Because not all of them have pure intentions.

Today, in addition to what I already presented in my previous podcast episodes, here are some more reasons Christians should care about what’s going on in the world of AI.

AI will be used to propagate deception, distractions and delusions

In John 8:44 Jesus was speaking about the devil. “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

2 Corinthians 11:14, “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

I believe that AI will be used to wage a massive war on truth. There will be a massive warping of the fabric of reality which is becoming easier as we live increasingly digital lives. It will be used to try to alter history and spread disgusting lies that will make many question reality. We are already seeing examples of this almost every day. Look at how it’s already being used in politics.

With all this going on, do you know what will naturally follow? Paranoia. Yup, people will start being more paranoid. Unless rigorous regulations and governance are put in place, many people will no longer know what to believe and this will affect their mental health.

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” The enemy wants to undermine your sound mind.

In OpenAI’s press release, they mentioned producing a detector that will be used to determine if the video is fake or real, This might be my crazy imagination going wild, but I cannot imagine these tools being free forever. What if you cannot afford a detector? What if you cannot afford the truth?

My prediction is that they will eventually come for the bible too, if God permits it. Do you own a physical bible? If you don’t now is the time to get one.

Although a lot of focus is on OpenAI right now, don’t forget that other companies are also working on developing more tools. Only God know what they are up to.

AI will be used to try and undermine us as image-bearers

In Genesis 1:26-28, the bible tells us that God created us in his image and likeness. As AI tech becomes more sophisticated and human-like, the question of what constitutes a human being will continue to arise. AI says we are just a bunch of atoms with extra computing power which means we can be easily replicated. Our voice, likeness and expressions are just some of the things they’ve been able to replicate. The good news is, we don’t get our dignity and value from our bodily functions or capabilities. It was bestowed on us by God for his glory.

One of the questions you need to ask yourself is why would anyone want to create tools like Sora.

Why not let people continue to use their creativity to create videos? Even though it’s a challenging and very technical skill, people have been excelling in developing their capabilities and skills over the years. Instead of creating something to replace the efforts of human beings that will also put a lot out of their jobs, why not invest in human development directly? We forget that sometimes that effort, that journey and that ability for creativity is very fulfilling. They will try to use AI to tempt many into a life of unending leisure. Don’t worry, AI will do all the work for you. You just need to rest, have fun and become as useless as possible.

Tools like Sora are created to maximise profit and some greedy people will not care about how it devalues or tramples on the dignity of others.

For us Christians, I see an opportunity to preach the gospel and lead many to understand their worth and true identity in Christ. It also means that the battle is fiercer, so we need to gear up right now!

Even if they build something that looks like you, Even if it copies your exact voice, they make it look like you, it wears your flesh (okay, that’s a bit creepy). It will never possess a soul and a spirit or the true likeness of God.

In addition to praying and preaching the gospel like never before which I mentioned in the previous AI episodes, there are a few other practical steps I think we should be taking.

1. Make a difference where you can

If you work in tech and there is a chance for you to play a godly influential role, please be ready for this. I believe God has strategically placed us in some places to make a difference. If you can influence ethics, the regulations etc, that would be wonderful. This is not the time to stick our heads in the sand hoping it will fly over and ignore us. It will affect every area of life. Be informed about what’s going on so that you can be a godly influence where possible.

If you’re in a place of influence or have a large platform, it’s time to speak up, especially for those who will be negatively affected. We will continue to be in the world until the return of Jesus Christ so we need to continue to be the light, no matter how dark it gets.

I will keep saying this one, pray and spread the gospel. You cannot stop the end time but you can let God use you to reach as many people as possible with his truth.

2. Teach your children

A lot of children born nowadays will live in a world that will be vastly different from the one we know today. And not necessarily in a good way. The devil loves going after children because of their innocence and vulnerability. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6 to teach our children the way of the Lord. It’s so important to teach your children about their identity in Christ. Teach them the foundational truth of who God has made them to be. Let them know that they were made in the image of God. Prepare them with the help of the Holy Spirit to withstand the lies and temptation the devil will propagate with these tools.

Teach your kids about absolute truth and that God is the source of truth. Teach them that truth is not relative or on a spectrum. I did a short monologue at the start of this season about truth, which I encourage you to listen to. It’s a very short one.

3. Do not be afraid

Although AI will make claims and attempts to be better than human beings, it can never be. You need to remember this truth, that you are wonderfully and beautifully made for the glory of God. We were made in the image and likeness of the almighty God so we can never be replaced. AI is just mimicry. Just because a parrot can talk doesn’t mean it’s a human. Artificial intelligence is a simulation of intelligence. It’s not real. It’s a perversion of intelligence. Whatever nonsense they build using AI is not the temple that God made our human bodies to be.

This however doesn’t mean that the devil will not try. Revelation 12:12 lets us know that Satan is incredibly angry and he is here to unleash his anger on human beings. His mission continues to be to steal, kill and destroy. He has no new tricks besides repackaging the same old and slapping some new paint job on to deceive you.

He will try his best to deceive many into believing they are worthless and no better than machines. Some usage of AI is just another chapter in the devil’s plan to usurp God and remove man from where God has placed him.

Brothers and sisters, there is good news. AI cannot overthrow God. God will remain forever sovereign, in control and loving towards his children. No matter what pops up, keep in mind that none of it takes God by surprise. No matter how brazen the devil gets, he is still limited in his power and time.

The challenges of AI are not something we need to look beyond the bible for answers for. Please read Ephesians 6:11-17.

I also love Psalm 46 so much;

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Verse 7 says: The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Dear Christian,

It’s time for us to get to work. There is a storm coming that will reveal the foundation that everyone has built on. The Godly foundation on which we build our lives is the only thing that will stand when the storms of life inevitably come. Like Jesus described in Matthew 7:24-27, Are you like the wise man who built his house on the rock? Or is your house built on shifting and sinking sand? Where is your hope and your trust?

Remain in his love.
